The Township of Mount Olive is located in northwestern Morris County and is bordered by Sussex and Warren Counties. With an area of over thirty-two (32) square miles, and a population estimated at 25,718 it is one of the most rapidly growing communities in Morris County and New Jersey. Mount Olive residents enjoy easy access to the major transportation roadways, Interstate 80, Routes 46 and 206 that traverse the Township, yet reside in a tranquil rural-suburban atmosphere.
A Mayor/Council form of local government was established by Charter in 1970. This provides for a Mayor who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Municipality, and who is responsible for the administration of the local government. A seven (7) member Council, elected at large, serves as the legislative body. The Charter provides for the Mayor to appoint a Business Administrator to supervise the day-to-day operation of the Township. In addition, the Mayor appoints the Directors of the various Township Departments. Those professionals, along with the Mayor and Council, are responsible for directing Mount Olive’s future growth in a manageable and environmentally sound manner, so that the qualities that make Mount Olive a desirable place to live and to work remain intact.
